Opta's supercomputer has predicted the outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between Ivory Coast and Norway, scheduled for June 30, 2026, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The simulation, based on 25,000 pre-game runs, gives Norway a 56.1% chance of winning in regular time, while Ivory Coast has a 21.6% chance, and a draw is rated at 22.3%.
Ivory Coast's Historic Knockout Debut
Ivory Coast, known as the Elephants, qualified for the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history. They finished second in Group E, with wins over Ecuador and Curaçao, but a loss to Germany. Norway, meanwhile, secured second place in Group I behind France, defeating Iraq and Senegal. This is Norway's first knockout appearance since France 1998.
Norway Favoured to Advance
According to the supercomputer, Norway has a 68.1% probability of reaching the Round of 16, while Ivory Coast's chances stand at 31.9%. The two teams have never met before in any competitive or friendly match. However, Norway faced African side Senegal in the group stage, winning 3-2, while Ivory Coast defeated France in a pre-tournament friendly.
Notably, two Round of 32 matches have already gone to extra time and penalties, with Paraguay beating Germany and Morocco defeating the Netherlands. This trend suggests that if the match extends beyond 90 minutes, Ivory Coast might have an advantage, though the data is limited.
Coaches' Perspectives
Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae acknowledged Norway's strengths but expressed confidence in his team. “They are a good team, an organised team, great individual players but they play well together, are very intensive, impactful, and they're very pragmatic. They don't need five or six attempts to score; they're clinical in front of goal,” he told FIFA. “We do have our strengths, we know how to play, and we will be up to the challenge on the physical side, and we will try to control the game and impose our pace.”
Norwegian boss Stale Solbakken predicted a tight contest. “I think it will be an even, tight game that can go either way. The match winner will have a little bit of luck on their side. It will be that close,” Solbakken added.
CAF's Recognition
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) sent a message to Ivory Coast after they reached the knockout stage. The Elephants are one of nine African teams in the Round of 32, marking a strong continental performance in the first round.
