NSC Supports Enugu for Coal City Games Infrastructure

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Enugu State’s preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival, known as the Coal City Games. This support includes the approval of critical sports infrastructure projects aimed at delivering a world-class event.

Approved Infrastructure Projects

The Federal Government, through the NSC, approved a series of strategic sports infrastructure projects for Enugu State. Among these are the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, the upgrade of the indoor sports hall, the rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels, and the execution of other supporting sporting infrastructure projects.

Swimming Pool Construction

The construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool represents a landmark investment in aquatic sports development. With aquatic athletes on the rise, winning medals at high-stakes championships, this facility is expected to provide better training and competition infrastructure. It will also position Enugu as a viable destination for national and international swimming competitions.

Indoor Sports Hall Upgrade

The planned upgrade of the indoor sports hall will modernize facilities used for basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, handball, combat sports, and other indoor events. The renovation aims to bring the venue closer to international standards, improve athlete welfare, and enhance the overall spectator experience.

Athletes’ Hostel Rehabilitation

Equally significant is the rehabilitation of athletes’ hostels, a project aimed at improving accommodation standards for athletes and officials. The upgraded hostels will provide a more conducive environment for training camps, competitions, and talent development programmes, while supporting Enugu’s readiness to host large-scale sporting events.

Additional Supporting Projects

The approval also covers additional supporting sporting infrastructure projects that will complement the state’s broader sports ecosystem. These developments are expected to strengthen grassroots participation, enhance sports tourism opportunities, stimulate economic activity, and create employment opportunities for young people across the state.

Federal Government’s Commitment

With these approvals, Enugu joins the growing list of states benefiting from the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to revitalizing sports infrastructure nationwide. The projects are expected to leave a lasting impact on athlete development, sports excellence, youth engagement, and economic growth, while contributing to the realization of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for sports, championed by the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).
