Nigeria Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team Makes Historic Qualification for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
The Nigerian women's wheelchair basketball team has achieved a monumental milestone by securing qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. This historic feat was accomplished after a thrilling victory over South Africa in the final of the Commonwealth Games qualifiers held in Angola.
Thrilling Final Victory Over South Africa
In an enthralling final on Thursday, March 26, the Nigerian team staged a remarkable comeback to defeat South Africa with a score of 8-3. This victory was particularly impressive given that Nigeria had previously lost to South Africa 7-3 during the group stage of the tournament. The team's resilience and determination were on full display as they overcame the tournament favorites to clinch the sole ticket to Glasgow.
Led by captain Ijigbamigbe Gbemisola Olubisi, the Nigerian squad demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the competition. Their ability to bounce back from an earlier defeat highlights the mental fortitude and strategic adjustments made by the players and coaching staff.
Leadership and Federation Praise
Seyi Johnson, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, expressed immense pride and fulfillment in the team's achievement. He described it as a monumental accomplishment that will significantly boost the growth and visibility of wheelchair basketball in Nigeria.
"As President, I feel very fulfilled that we have been able to make history in Nigerian wheelchair basketball," Johnson stated. "Everyone associated with the sport, past and present, deserves credit for this milestone, which reflects years of dedication and hard work."
Johnson also extended gratitude to the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their pivotal role in the team's success. He specifically thanked Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their guidance and support, which has enabled sports of all sizes to thrive in Nigeria.
Men's Team Narrowly Misses Qualification
While the women's team celebrated their historic qualification, the Nigerian men's wheelchair basketball team faced a narrow defeat in their final match. They lost 13-8 to South Africa, just missing out on qualification for the Commonwealth Games. Despite this setback, both Nigeria and South Africa will officially represent the African continent at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Nigeria competing in the women's event and South Africa in the men's event.
This dual representation underscores the growing competitiveness and talent within African wheelchair basketball, setting the stage for an exciting showcase at the international level in 2026.
