AU Evaluation Team Commends Nigeria's 2031 African Games Bid Presentation
Nigeria's ambition to host the 15th African Games in 2031 received a significant boost this week as the African Union Sports Council Evaluation Committee praised the country's comprehensive bid presentation. The AU team visited Abuja for a detailed assessment of Nigeria's preparedness for the continental sporting event, leaving impressed by what they witnessed.
Strong Government Commitment and Private Sector Alignment
The AU evaluation team, led by Dr. Decius Chipande, was received by top officials of the National Sports Commission and treated to a thorough presentation showcasing Nigeria's readiness, capacity, and vision for hosting a memorable Games. The committee specifically noted the clarity of vision, depth of planning, and strong alignment between government and private sector as key factors that would contribute to Nigeria's successful hosting.
In his remarks, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, reaffirmed the Federal Government's full support for the bid. "Hosting the African Games remains a national priority," Dikko emphasized, "backed by strong political will and a commitment to deliver world-class infrastructure, seamless organization, and a lasting legacy for African sports."
Comprehensive Technical and Financial Framework
Director General of the Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, presented Nigeria's strategic sponsorship and marketing framework, outlining innovative approaches to funding and commercial partnerships. He highlighted that Nigeria's large market, vibrant sports culture, and growing private sector interest provide a solid foundation for a financially successful Games.
On the technical front, several experts provided detailed presentations:
- Mainasara Ilo, ace broadcaster and Bid Coordinator, delivered an engaging presentation on legacy, highlighting how the Games would catalyze youth development, infrastructure expansion, and community impact across Nigeria
- Dr. Paul Onyedo, former Director of Medicine at the Commission, detailed Nigeria's preparedness in sports medicine and its scientific approach to anti-doping, testing, and athlete health management, aligning with international best practices
- Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa presented the country's comprehensive welfare framework, assuring the Committee of Nigeria's readiness to provide a safe, secure, and athlete-centered environment throughout the Games
Confidence in Nigeria's Hosting Capabilities
The AU Committee inspected key facilities during their visit and left Abuja with members expressing satisfaction based on their observations. Nigeria remains confident that its compelling bid, backed by experience, infrastructure, and national commitment, positions the country strongly to host a historic and impactful African Games.
An official of the National Sports Commission told The Guardian that the bid aligns with ongoing efforts to reposition sports as a major contributor to national growth and economic development. "With a strong record of hosting international sporting events and renewed investment in sports facilities across the country," the official expressed confidence in Nigeria's chances, "we possess the experience, resources, and institutional strength needed to deliver a memorable and world-class tournament."
