NSC Upbeat as Weightlifters Train Overseas for Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria's preparations for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with key athletes already embarking on intensive overseas training programs. In a recent telephone interview with The Guardian, the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, outlined the comprehensive strategies being implemented to ensure a successful campaign at the prestigious international event.

Overseas Training Initiatives for Weightlifters

Olopade revealed that Nigeria's weightlifting team has commenced specialized training sessions in Samoa and Egypt as part of a deliberate effort to enhance their performance and readiness for the Commonwealth Games. This overseas exposure is designed to provide the athletes with world-class facilities and competitive environments, which are crucial for refining their techniques and building mental resilience ahead of the global competition.

Additional Preparations Across Sports Disciplines

Beyond weightlifting, the NSC has secured significant support for other sports. The British Council has agreed to train two Nigerian cyclists, offering them access to expert coaching and advanced training methodologies. Furthermore, Nigeria's Wheelchair Basketball team is scheduled to engage in friendly matches against their British counterparts during a four-week training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland. This camp, set for June, aims to facilitate acclimatization, improve team cohesion, and eliminate logistical challenges for Team Nigeria athletes.

Olopade emphasized that preparations for the Commonwealth Games began well in advance, with measures such as the payment of training grants to both local and foreign-based athletes. He highlighted that track and field athletes have been training at a camp in Asaba, while boxers recently completed their selection process in Lagos. Notably, the wheelchair basketball team secured their qualification by defeating South Africa in Angola, a historic achievement for Nigerian sports.

Strategic Appointments and Support Systems

To bolster morale and ensure a strong outing, the NSC has appointed distinguished Team Nigeria Ambassadors, including respected sports administrators like Dr. Amos Adamu, Chief Patrick Ekeji, Mallam Saleh Ahmadu, and Alhassan Yakmut. These individuals, some of whom previously served as Directors-General of the NSC, bring a wealth of experience expected to benefit the team's preparations and overall performance. Their appointments reflect the NSC's strategic effort to blend administrative expertise, technical knowledge, and athlete experience in strengthening Team Nigeria's campaign.

Olopade also confirmed that all kits and apparel for the Commonwealth Games have been supplied by Puma, ensuring that athletes have adequate resources for training and competition without complaints. The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026, bringing together thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth nations, and Nigeria is positioning itself for a memorable and impactful participation.
