Delta Governor Oborevwori Blasts Contractor Over Delayed Warri Stadium Project
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has strongly criticized the contractor handling the re-modelling of Warri City Stadium for significant delays and poor-quality work during a recent inspection visit. The governor, accompanied by key figures including Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau and National Institute for Sports (NIS) Director General Philip Shaibu, voiced his dissatisfaction with the project's progress, highlighting that the initial completion date was set for December 2025.
Contractor's Failure to Meet Deadlines
During the inspection on Tuesday, Governor Oborevwori expressed his frustration, stating, "I wasn't smiling because we have an agreement with the contractor. The agreement was for the contractor to finish the job in December, and now we are in April." He warned that further failures would attract public scrutiny and emphasized that the state government would not alter the existing contract but would ensure the contractor adheres to agreed specifications. The governor stressed that timelines must be respected to avoid further complications.
Substandard Work and Quality Concerns
Oborevwori also rejected aspects of the ongoing work, particularly the cladding, which he described as substandard and temporary. He insisted, "We have paid for quality, not something that will fade in a few years. This cladding you are seeing is temporary, and it will be removed. Only durable materials that can stand the test of time would be accepted." He identified the contracting firm as Peculiar Consults Company and urged the media to hold them accountable, adding, "If he fails us again, we will expose him."
Reasons for Renovation and Future Plans
The governor explained the decision to renovate the existing stadium rather than build a new one, citing land limitations and the need to preserve the identity of Warri Stadium. He noted that plans to relocate residents around the facility were rejected to protect their homes and livelihoods. Looking ahead, Oborevwori expressed optimism that the upgraded stadium would host major sporting events, reaffirming Delta State's commitment to sports development. He also revealed plans to renovate the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba after the Warri project is completed.
Contractor's Promises and Official Reactions
According to sources, when the December 2025 deadline was missed, the contractor allegedly promised Delta Sports Commission officials to deliver the stadium before May this year. However, an official stated, "We are approaching the month of May, and the job is still far from being completed. Now, he is making another promise to deliver the stadium in September, and the Governor is not happy with such a promise and fail." Efforts to contact the CEO of Peculiar Consults, Mr. Adeleke, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls.
Despite the issues, Governor Oborevwori commended the quality of the playing pitch, describing it as satisfactory and in line with expectations. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in infrastructure projects and the need for accountability in public contracts.
