The Nigerian Football Federation has moved to defuse a brewing crisis within the national team camp in Morocco, confirming that the Central Bank of Nigeria is now processing outstanding allowances for the Super Eagles.

Threat of Boycott Over Unpaid Bonuses

On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, reports emerged that the Nigerian squad was considering drastic action over unpaid bonuses at the Africa Cup of Nations. Journalist Oluwashina Okeleji disclosed via his official X account that players and coaching staff were waiting on win bonuses from four matches.

The unpaid bonuses covered victories against Tanzania (2-1), Tunisia (3-2), Uganda (3-1) in the group stage, and the 4-0 thrashing of Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday. Okeleji reported that the team, while focused, had threatened not to train or travel to Marrakech on Thursday if the issue remained unresolved.

NFF Official Provides Crucial Update

Following the threat, journalist Tobi Adepoju, known as Oganla Media, provided a critical update after speaking with a top NFF official. The official stated that the monies have been processed from the CBN to the players' and officials' individual banks.

"The players and officials will receive all their bonuses when the process is completed," the NFF official was quoted as saying. This intervention appears to have averted the immediate threat of a boycott ahead of a crucial knockout match.

Quarterfinal Showdown Against Algeria Looms

The timing of this financial dispute was particularly sensitive. The Eric Chelle-led Super Eagles are scheduled to face Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals in Marrakech on Saturday, January 10, 2026. The team had progressed unbeaten, showcasing strong form, but the bonus issue threatened to derail their campaign.

This is not the first time Nigerian football has been embroiled in payment controversies during major tournaments. The NFF had reportedly made promises to the squad regarding bonuses before the tournament commenced in Morocco.

The resolution from the CBN and NFF now allows the three-time African champions to fully concentrate on their quest for a fourth title, with a semi-final place at stake against their North African rivals.
