Dikko: FIFA Still Handling Nigeria's Petition Against DR Congo, World Cup Dream Alive
Nigeria's World Cup Petition Still Active, Says Dikko

The hope of the Super Eagles qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains alive, as the petition filed against the Democratic Republic of Congo is still under active consideration by FIFA. This is according to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko.

Petition Against DR Congo Still in Play

Nigeria lodged a formal complaint with the world football governing body, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the final African playoff match for the 2026 World Cup. The crucial match was played in Morocco in late 2025.

Contrary to reports that the petition had been dismissed, Dikko clarified the situation while speaking with journalists in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, 6 January 2026. He explained that FIFA follows a detailed procedure for such cases, often involving independent bodies.

"FIFA has a way of working on issues concerning petitions on eligibility of players," Dikko stated. "The world football governing body works with independent bodies in that regard, and I can tell you that Nigeria’s petition against DR Congo is still being handled at that level."

Potential Appeal to CAS and Stadium Revamp Plans

Dikko indicated that the process is complex and the final decision could be appealed by either party. "It requires a lot of things, and by the time it is finally decided upon, if Nigeria wins, or DR Congo wins, I believe the case might even go to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS)," he revealed.

Beyond the petition, the NSC Chairman shed light on the Federal Government's commitment to sports infrastructure. He announced plans to renovate and reshape key stadiums across the nation in 2026 to boost sports development. The facilities slated for upgrades include:

  • The National Stadium in Abuja
  • The National Stadium in Lagos
  • Stadia in Kaduna
  • Stadia in Ibadan

Praise for Tinubu and AFCON Ambitions

Dikko also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support, noting that the President has a "listening ear" and has fulfilled pledges made to the Super Eagles before the ongoing AFCON in Morocco. He expressed gratitude for the administration's care for athletes, coaches, and administrators.

Looking at the current African Cup of Nations tournament, Dikko voiced a strong expectation for victory. "My prayer is for the Super Eagles to go all the way to the final and win this AFCON," he said. He recalled the rewards given after the team's final appearance in Cote d’Ivoire and stated, "We are not expecting anything less here in Morocco. We have to win the AFCON title this time."

The Super Eagles' immediate focus is on the AFCON, but the resolution of the FIFA petition could ultimately determine their path to the 2026 World Cup.
