NIQS and Donald Duke Advocate for Cost Control Units in MDAs to Curb Construction Expenses
The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has issued a strong appeal to the government, urging the engagement of certified quantity surveyors in project procurement and contract management as a strategic measure to reduce escalating construction costs across the country. This call was made during a significant ceremony in Abuja, where the NIQS Secretariat Building was named in honor of former institute president, Mr. Olusegun Ajanlekoko.
Professional Expertise to Tackle Rising Costs
NIQS President, Dr. Aminu Bashir, emphasized that members of the institute are continuously undergoing training in cost management for infrastructure projects, positioning them as key players in ensuring financial discipline. He highlighted the critical need for their involvement in public projects to enhance efficiency and curb wasteful spending.
In a notable endorsement, former Cross River State governor, Donald Duke, praised Ajanlekoko's firm for saving approximately N3 billion during the construction of the Tinapa Resort project. Duke advocated for a more robust role for quantity surveyors in public finance, recommending that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) establish dedicated units for cost control to approve and monitor budgets effectively.
Emphasis on Excellence and Leadership
During his acceptance speech, Ajanlekoko stressed the importance of deploying registered professionals to achieve value for money in both public and private projects. He urged practitioners to consistently pursue excellence and embrace responsible leadership throughout their careers, noting that excellence is built on trust, sustains legacy, and reflects in the quality of work delivered.
He described the naming of the Abuja Secretariat as "QS J. Segun Ajanlekoko House," expressing deep humility and surprise at the honor, which he noted is typically bestowed posthumously. Ajanlekoko reflected on his contributions, including developing the institute's secretariat in Victoria Island, Lagos, without personal gain, and emphasized that leadership should be grounded in service and character rather than titles or wealth.

Chairman of Family Homes Fund Limited, Demola Adebise, who chaired the event, underscored the critical role of quantity surveyors in ensuring cost discipline, transparency, and value delivery in construction projects. He stated that sustainable delivery at scale is impossible without strong built environment professionals, describing the quantity surveyor as "the conscience of a project."
Ajanlekoko further urged young quantity surveyors to remain committed to integrity, discipline, and selfless service, highlighting that the profession is essential to the construction industry's heartbeat. He called for the building to stand as a symbol of excellence and innovation, representing the profession's readiness to take charge and deliver responsibilities creditably.
