The Canadian Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. James Christoff, has confirmed that both countries are actively working towards establishing direct flight connections. Speaking at an event in Lagos, Christoff stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and boost economic cooperation.

Christoff revealed that direct flights between Canada and Nigeria would significantly enhance trade, investment, and tourism. He noted that the Canadian government is committed to facilitating the process, which includes addressing regulatory and operational requirements. 'We are in constant dialogue with Nigerian authorities to make this a reality,' he said.
Economic and Social Benefits
The establishment of direct flights is expected to reduce travel time and costs for passengers, currently forced to transit through European or Middle Eastern hubs. This would benefit the large Nigerian diaspora in Canada, estimated at over 100,000 people, and encourage more Canadian businesses to explore opportunities in Nigeria. The Deputy High Commissioner emphasised that the move aligns with Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy and its focus on deepening engagement with African nations.

Key challenges include negotiating air service agreements, ensuring safety standards, and addressing visa policies. Christoff mentioned that both sides are working on a memorandum of understanding to streamline these issues. 'We are optimistic that direct flights will commence within the next two years,' he added.
