The President delivered this assurance while receiving a distinguished British Airways delegation at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Framing the anniversary as both symbolic and profoundly strategic, President Tinubu emphasized that the nine-decade relationship underscores the enduring cooperation between Nigeria and Britain. This partnership spans critical sectors including aviation, trade, and investment. "It is a very great joy to share with you this afternoon. The transformation and strengthening of our relationship over the past 90 years is a milestone worthy of celebration," the President stated.
He fondly recalled his recent state visit to the United Kingdom and the warm reception extended by King Charles III. Tinubu noted that Nigeria deeply values its long-standing ties with the British monarchy and the broader Commonwealth community. He added that shared priorities, particularly in sustainability and robust economic cooperation, will continue to guide and enhance bilateral engagement between the two nations.
Ongoing Reforms and Global Standards
President Tinubu highlighted the ongoing comprehensive reforms across Nigeria's aviation and economic sectors. He stressed the imperative to meet global standards, boost investor confidence, and deepen people-to-people connections. "Nigeria is still going through reforms and transformation of our aviation industry and every aspect of our economy. We must meet global standards and encourage connectivity while promoting trade and partnership," he asserted.
The President also pointed to concerted efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to clear outstanding liabilities owed to foreign airlines. He described this move as critical to restoring confidence and fortifying international partnerships, ensuring a more stable operating environment for global carriers like British Airways.

Commending British Airways' pivotal role in linking Nigeria to global markets, President Tinubu stated that the airline has remained a key enabler of trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between both countries. In his remarks, British Airways' Commercial Officer, Colm Lacy, described Nigeria as one of the airline's most important markets globally. He noted that the airline's presence since 1936 has supported generations of Nigerians through business, education, and travel. "Nigeria is not simply a destination but a long-standing, valued market with which we share deep people-to-people and commercial ties," Lacy emphasized.
He commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria for their roles in strengthening safety and regulatory standards within the sector. Lacy also acknowledged the Central Bank's proactive role in addressing foreign exchange constraints, a longstanding concern for international airlines operating in Nigeria.
Fleet Upgrades and Policy Compliance
Earlier, Minister Festus Keyamo disclosed significant developments. He noted that British Airways has upgraded its fleet on the Nigeria-London route with newer, more advanced aircraft. Furthermore, the airline has complied with federal policy requiring international carriers to support local catering services by offering authentic Nigerian dishes on outbound flights, promoting local industry.

Also speaking at the event, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, expressed profound satisfaction with the longevity of British Airways' operations in Nigeria. He lauded President Tinubu's recent state visit to the UK, noting that it yielded significant commercial outcomes. "I know that Their Majesties, the King and Queen, were delighted with the visit... and that substantial investment agreements were reached," Montgomery stated, highlighting agreements to support the rehabilitation of Lagos ports as a key achievement.
