ECOWAS Unveils Regional Economic Outlook, Cybersecurity Hackathon

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken significant steps to bolster regional integration, economic resilience, and digital security. On June 9, 2026, the bloc released its 2025–2027 Regional Economic Outlook (REO) and kicked off the fourth edition of the ECOWAS Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon in Accra, Ghana. These twin initiatives highlight ECOWAS's dedication to tackling emerging economic and technological challenges while promoting sustainable development across West Africa.

Regional Economic Outlook 2025-2027

The Regional Economic Outlook, a flagship publication of ECOWAS, offers a thorough analysis of macroeconomic developments in member states, with a particular focus on food security and regional integration. According to the ECOWAS Commission, the report is released amid a global context of moderate economic recovery, ongoing geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, and growing uncertainties affecting international supply chains. The document reviews recent economic performance across ECOWAS member states, evaluates medium-term growth prospects, and outlines strategic policy recommendations to foster inclusive and sustainable development throughout the region. ECOWAS emphasized that strengthening food security and accelerating regional integration are essential for ensuring long-term economic stability and prosperity for its over 400 million citizens.

Fourth Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon

In a parallel effort to enhance digital resilience, ECOWAS launched the fourth edition of its Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon in Accra under the theme, “Regional Collaboration through Technology: Building the Digital Future of West Africa Together.” This 48-hour competition began at 13:00 GMT on June 9 and will conclude on June 11, bringing together some of West Africa's brightest cybersecurity talents from 12 ECOWAS member states. Participants engage in practical cybersecurity challenge exercises designed to improve critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in response to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The hackathon aims to deepen regional cooperation in cybersecurity, strengthen local capacity, and foster a safer and more trusted digital ecosystem across West Africa. ECOWAS officials noted that the initiative reflects the bloc's growing recognition of cybersecurity as a key pillar of economic growth, innovation, and regional stability in an increasingly digital world.
