For Chiamaka Catherine Ginikinwa, founder of ChaCha Fit, fitness was never part of a carefully crafted career plan. Instead, it emerged from a difficult period in her life and gradually evolved into a profession that has allowed her to impact others while rebuilding her own confidence.
Early Life and Challenges
Originally from Udi in Enugu State, she experienced loss early in life after losing her parents as a child. Much of her upbringing was spent living with relatives, an experience she says shaped her outlook on life and taught her resilience and self-reliance. Like many young people facing uncertainty, she searched for stability and purpose. Fitness became one of the outlets that helped her navigate personal challenges.
From Personal Struggle to Professional Calling
What began as a way to stay active and improve her mental well-being eventually transformed into something much bigger. "Fitness helped me become more confident, disciplined and mentally stronger," she recalls. That personal transformation inspired her decision to pursue fitness professionally. The journey, however, was far from straightforward.
One of her earliest challenges was maintaining consistency in her own fitness routine while also finding the resources to invest in training and gym memberships. Later, when she began working as a personal trainer, building a client base proved difficult. She entered an industry where credibility often has to be earned over time and where many people were initially sceptical about what she was trying to achieve. Through persistence, referrals and social media engagement, she gradually established herself and built relationships with clients seeking healthier lifestyles.
Launching ChaCha Fit
In 2021, she formally launched ChaCha Fit, a fitness and wellness platform aimed at helping people improve their health, strength and confidence. Since then, the brand has grown through personal training services, group fitness sessions and wellness-focused initiatives. Over the years, she has worked with more than 100 individuals through various programmes and coaching sessions.
While weight loss is often one of the goals clients bring to her, she says many of the most significant changes occur beyond physical appearance. According to her, some clients have improved their overall fitness levels, adopted healthier routines and developed greater confidence through consistent training and lifestyle adjustments.
Notable Programmes and Recognition
Among the projects she considers most significant is Body Magic, a functional fitness programme designed to encourage regular physical activity in a supportive environment. More than 50 participants have taken part in the programme, which focuses on movement, endurance and overall wellness rather than appearance alone.
Her work has also attracted attention within the fitness community. She has been nominated for Fitness Influencer of the Year and has received recognition during International Women's Day celebrations for her contributions to fitness and wellness. She has also participated in fitness-related interviews, community events and wellness campaigns.
Professional Certifications and Collaborations
Professionally, she holds several certifications, including the EQF Level 4 Personal Training Certification from the Institute of Exercise Professionals, First Aid and AED Certification, Technogym Train the Trainers Certification and Training Methodology Certification. She recently completed her EQF Level 4 qualification and plans to further her education in functional and group fitness training.
Beyond coaching, she has collaborated with a number of fitness, wellness and lifestyle brands, including international fitness company Technogym and sportswear brand Puma, alongside local brands operating within the wellness space.
Advocacy and Future Plans
Her interest in fitness extends beyond exercise programmes. She is particularly passionate about educating people on sustainable fitness habits, nutrition and the benefits of strength training. One misconception she frequently addresses is the belief that weightlifting causes women to become excessively muscular. She argues that strength training plays an important role in maintaining health, mobility and quality of life, particularly as people grow older. She also believes conversations around women's health require greater attention in Nigeria, although she notes that more women are becoming conscious of the importance of fitness and preventive healthcare.
Outside her business activities, she supports community-based fitness initiatives and encourages people from different backgrounds to embrace healthier lifestyles. Her advocacy centres largely on wellness, self-development and women's empowerment.
Looking ahead, she hopes to expand the reach of ChaCha Fit through new programmes, products and digital platforms while continuing to grow its community. Her ambitions include developing a fitness facility, expanding her activewear business and creating tools that help people achieve their health goals. Despite those aspirations, she says the most important aspect of her journey remains the message behind it. Having overcome personal adversity and built a career from modest beginnings, she hopes her story encourages others to believe that circumstances do not have to define their future.
For her, fitness has always been about more than exercise. It is a vehicle for confidence, discipline and personal growth—qualities she first discovered in herself and now seeks to help others develop.
