Opportunities can transform lives, especially when paired with the right skills, support, and confidence to take the first step. Lafarge Africa is championing a more inclusive future by opening blue-collar careers in construction to women, a sector where they have been historically underrepresented.
Building Skills for Real Opportunities
Through its BuildHer by Lafarge initiative, the company recently celebrated the graduation of 100 women trained in tiling and block laying across Nigeria. The program operated in Lagos, Ogun, and Cross River states, targeting women from underserved communities. Over eight weeks, participants received hands-on training with Lafarge Africa’s flagship products, gaining practical experience for real-world opportunities. Beyond technical skills, the program focused on building confidence, independence, and a sense of possibility.
Expanding Access and Closing Gender Gaps
The construction industry has long faced a gender gap in skilled trades. BuildHer takes deliberate steps to bridge this gap by providing access to training and resources. Lafarge Africa equips women with employable skills and supports their journey toward economic independence and long-term growth, aligning with the company’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sustainable development.
Power of Partnership
This edition of BuildHer was delivered in collaboration with key government partners, including the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs. These partnerships ensure the program reaches more women and creates lasting community impact.
More Than Training: A Pathway Forward
Lafarge Africa views BuildHer as more than a training initiative—it is a pathway into skilled work, entrepreneurship, and a professional network. Upon graduation, participants were enrolled in the Block Makers and Tilers Association of Nigeria, gaining access to a professional community that supports their workforce transition. They also received essential tools to start their careers, ensuring the journey continues beyond training into practice.
Stories of Growth and Transformation
For many women, this experience has been life-changing. Learning a new trade and gaining confidence has opened doors that once seemed out of reach. Their stories highlight that when women are given opportunities to learn and grow, the impact extends beyond individuals to families, communities, and the broader economy.
Building the Future Together
Looking ahead, Lafarge Africa remains focused on investing in initiatives that create opportunities, expand access, and support women in building sustainable livelihoods. Empowering women is not just about inclusion—it is about building stronger communities, a more diverse industry, and a future where everyone can contribute meaningfully.
