The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Joe Ajaero, has declared that increasing the minimum wage is less important than stabilizing the national currency. He argued that even a wage as high as N1 million would be meaningless if the current economic hardships persist.

Speaking with reporters from the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, April 28, in Abuja, Ajaero emphasized that a high salary is useless if it cannot cover basic needs. He called for urgent measures to improve the purchasing power of the naira.
According to Punch, the labour leader noted that the rising cost of living has made it extremely difficult for workers to afford essentials such as housing, food, and clothing. He blamed the surge in fuel prices for worsening living conditions and urged the government to shield Nigeria from the ripple effects of global conflicts.
Impact of Global Events on Nigeria
Ajaero referenced the conflict in West Asia, where the United States and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran, a major oil producer. In response, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which about 25% of the world's oil passes. This caused crude oil prices to skyrocket, driving up the cost of goods and services in Nigeria.
"It is not ideal that events in other parts of the world automatically translate into hardship in Nigeria. We must build a system that protects our economy and citizens," he said.
Timeline for Minimum Wage Negotiation
The NLC boss stated that the next push for a minimum wage increase will follow legal procedures and will not be rushed due to the upcoming general elections. "The minimum wage has not been negotiated yet. It is a process that must follow the law. When it is time, we will commence negotiation ahead of its expiration. It cannot be rushed because of election timelines," he explained.
