Sea Pirates Kidnap 20 Passengers Including JAMB Candidates in Calabar Waterways
In a shocking maritime security breach, armed sea pirates have abducted no fewer than 20 passengers, including candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), along the Calabar waterways. The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, when the assailants ambushed a passenger ferry traveling from Calabar in Cross River State to Oron in Akwa Ibom State.
Details of the Pirate Attack
A naval officer, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, confirmed the pirate attack. According to the officer, the pirates struck while the ferry was navigating the waterway, forcibly whisking away the passengers at gunpoint. Although the exact number of abducted individuals could not be immediately verified, it was reported that many of the victims were UTME candidates en route to sit for their JAMB examinations in Akwa Ibom State.
The Cross River State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding this development, leaving families and authorities in a state of uncertainty as search and rescue efforts are anticipated to commence.
Context of Recent Kidnappings Involving Students
This alarming incident follows a similar pattern of attacks targeting students and examination candidates. Just last Friday, suspected gunmen abducted 13 persons, including UTME candidates, aboard an 18-seater Benue Links bus along the Makurdi-Otukpo highway. Fortunately, all victims from that earlier abduction have since regained their freedom, but the recurrence of such incidents underscores persistent security vulnerabilities affecting educational pursuits in Nigeria.
The abduction of JAMB candidates highlights critical challenges in ensuring safe transit for students during examination periods, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of security measures on both land and maritime routes. As investigations into the Calabar pirate attack unfold, stakeholders are calling for enhanced patrols and coordinated responses to protect citizens and prevent future occurrences.
