Ex-Governor's Aide Urges Support for Vulnerable Children

Dr. Oscar Ofuka, the former Special Adviser to the Cross River State Governor on Cocoa Development and Control, has called for increased societal support for vulnerable children to enable them to compete equally with their peers. He made this appeal on Wednesday after donating food items and toiletries worth millions of naira to the Motherless Babies Home Uwanse in Calabar.

Donation and Appeal

Speaking in the presence of the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Social Development, represented by State Director Mrs. Obeten Kokomo David, Ofuka noted the strong potential among the orphanage's children. He urged all levels of government to prioritize those who are unsure of their next meal. Ofuka emphasized that his decision to celebrate his 64th birthday at the orphanage was intentional, as he recognizes the great potential within these children who lack parental care but deserve nurturing.

Emotional Birthday Celebration

Describing the day as emotional, Ofuka expressed his joy in marking his birthday with the children, stating that he woke up thinking about them because they are close to his heart. He praised the caregivers for maintaining a clean and serene environment, noting that the children appeared better cared for than many on the streets. He declared his willingness to give his last resources to meet their needs.

Commendation and Call for Rule of Law

Ofuka commended Governor Bassey Otu and former Governor Prof. Benedict Ayade for their support to the needy. He highlighted his role under Ayade in driving the cocoa revolution, which involved reforming the sector, recovering land, and establishing plantations, including the CRBC model farm and the 1,800-hectare plantation in Aking Osomba. He warned that disobedience to court orders leads to political decay and stressed the importance of obeying the rule of law and abiding by judicial decisions.

Future Leaders

Concluding his remarks, Ofuka stated that the children possess leadership potential and deserve continued support. He emphasized that with proper nurturing, they can become great leaders of tomorrow. He urged everyone to do everything possible to give them life, hope, and cherish them as their own children.
