The Lagos State Government has reiterated that educating children on road safety is crucial for reducing accidents and nurturing responsible citizenship. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this statement during a road safety and transport awareness session for pupils of St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi. The event featured storytelling, adventure, and practical demonstrations to teach essential road safety principles.
Commissioner's Remarks
Osiyemi stated, “The future of road safety starts with education. When children understand safety, awareness and responsibility from a young age, they become better road users and responsible citizens.” He called for stronger collaboration between government agencies and private organisations to deliver road safety messages in creative and engaging ways that children can easily understand and remember.
Partnership with Lumi
The school outreach was executed in partnership with children’s educational brand, Lumi, with the goal of strengthening road safety awareness among schoolchildren through an interactive learning initiative. The programme was facilitated by Ms. Pelumi Nubi, founder of Lumi, who is also the Lagos State Tourism Ambassador and the first woman to complete a solo 10,000-kilometre drive from London to Lagos.
Drawing from her historic transcontinental journey, Nubi shared practical insights into transportation systems and how they connect communities, inspire exploration, and create opportunities. She explained that her experience inspired the creation of Lumi, a purple cartoon car designed to teach children courage, curiosity, kindness, and an understanding of the world through storytelling.
Interactive Learning Session
During the session, pupils were taught safe pedestrian practices, the meaning of traffic lights, road signs, and pedestrian crossings, as well as safety measures when using buses, trains, and ferries. The programme also encouraged children to make responsible travel decisions while building confidence and civic responsibility.
Since its inception, Lumi has reached thousands of children through school outreach programmes centred on Nubi’s London-to-Lagos expedition, using storytelling to promote learning, courage, and exploration.
Future Plans
Organisers said the St. Saviour’s School programme forms part of a wider plan to expand the Lumi Transportation Safety and Awareness Programme across Lagos State, equipping more children with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate their communities safely.
