Geopolitical Zones in Nigeria: An Overview
Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones, created during General Sani Abacha's regime for administrative purposes. Each zone comprises multiple states with unique cultural and demographic characteristics.

Political Representation and the Zones
Professor Sati Umaru Fwatshak of the University of Jos explains that the geopolitical zones were intended to ensure inclusive governance. The PDP initially implemented a zoning system allocating key offices across zones, but this tradition weakened under the APC. President Tinubu's administration has sought to restore balance, with each zone now holding at least one major political office.
