The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) has officially released the salary structure for doctors working within its system. The information, available on the NHS website, details the annual pay for various medical positions effective from April 1, 2026.
Salary for Resident Doctors
Doctors in foundational training, which occurs after completing a medical degree and involves rotations across different specialties, earn a basic annual salary ranging from £40,190 (approximately N72,920,936) to £45,994 (N83,456,434). This training includes the first year (FY1) and second year (FY2) before proceeding to specialist training.
Specialist Doctor Salaries
For doctors engaged in specialist training, the basic salary is between £54,499 (N98,876,173) and £76,582 (N138,961,178). Specialty doctors, who have completed training, earn between £63,696 (N115,542,569) and £102,689 (N186,286,574). Specialist grade doctors, effective April 1, 2026, receive a basic salary of £104,401 (N189,392,288) to £115,341 (N209,274,479).
Consultant and GP Pay
Consultants earn a basic salary of £113,565 (N206,082,998) to £150,569 (N273,233,047) per year, depending on service length. Additional responsibilities in management or education can increase pay, and consultants may also work in private practice. General practitioners employed by independent contractor practices or primary care organisations earn between £78,699 (N142,814,839) and £118,759 (N215,477,635).
