3 Nigerian Students to Represent Country at STEM Olympiad

Three outstanding students from Nigeria's South-East region have secured spots at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome after emerging champions in the Southeast STEM Mathematics Olympiad. The trio—Onwubiko Chimduebube Victor (13), Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan (11), and Don Anele Munachimso Marvellous (17)—outperformed over 11,500 participants to win their respective categories.

Champions and Their Aspirations

Each champion brings a history of academic excellence. Victor, a national mathematics champion, aspires to be a software engineer. Ethan, an 11-year-old primary category prodigy, also aims for a career in software engineering. Marvellous, an award-winning chemistry and mathematics student, hopes to become a medical doctor. Victor attends Evergreen College in Enugu, while Ethan and Marvellous study at Diamond Special Schools and Diamond Special College in Owerri, respectively.

Competition Details

The Southeast Maths Olympiad attracted 11,522 students from Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states. It was established to reignite interest in mathematics and strengthen STEM education among young people in the region. According to Alex Onyia, Convener of the Southeast Maths Olympiad, the total cost of sending the three students to Rome, including flights, accommodation, registration, and logistics, is estimated at £32,200.

Individual Achievements

Victor, winner of the Junior Category, previously finished first in the Nigeria National Mathematics Competition in Abuja. Ethan, the Primary Category Grand Champion, is known for his exceptional problem-solving abilities. Marvellous, the Senior Category Regional Champion, recently received a national award for outstanding performance in IGCSE Chemistry and a cash prize of ₦5 million for his regional success.

International Stage

The International STEM Olympiad provides a platform for young innovators and problem-solvers from around the world to compete and collaborate. Winners receive international recognition and medals. The Nigerian representatives are set to showcase the academic excellence and intellectual potential of Nigerian students on the global stage.
