Janet Onyemuze: From Fear to Fulfillment at UI

A recent graduate of the University of Ibadan (UI), Janet Onyemuze, has shared her inspiring academic journey, revealing how she overcame self-doubt, found love, and earned a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in BSc Agricultural Economics. In a LinkedIn post, she reflected on her initial goal of graduating with a first-class degree and the personal growth that reshaped her university experience.

Setting High Expectations

Janet entered UI with a clear ambition: to graduate with excellence, ideally a first class, to make her parents proud. However, she admitted that fear and self-doubt initially made this goal seem unattainable. “I doubted myself more than I should have, and that doubt made the goal look so far away… almost unreachable,” she wrote. For a time, she scaled down her dreams because she lacked belief in her capabilities.

Transformation Through Experience

Over the years, Janet’s perspective shifted as she encountered people who challenged her thinking. She made lasting friendships, found love, faced loss, deepened her faith, and took on leadership roles she once thought beyond her. “I discovered a stronger relationship with God. I took up leadership roles I once thought I wasn’t bold enough for. And slowly, I realized I was becoming the person who could achieve the things I once feared,” she explained.

Academic Outcome and Reflection

By the time she fully believed in herself, she was in her penultimate year, but she pushed forward and flourished. She graduated with a Second Class Upper Division, a result she is proud of. “Today, I’m proud of the woman I’ve become. I’m no longer the timid girl who walked into UI,” she stated. Janet expressed gratitude for the entire journey, including the highs and lows, friendships, and faith.

Social Media Reactions

Her post garnered supportive comments from followers. Feyintoluwa Eyebiokin said, “Cheers to becoming.” Olufunke Boluwatife Adesayo congratulated her, and Annastesia Ononuju added, “Congratulations, Jay Jay.”

Broader Context

Janet’s story resonates with many Nigerian students who face academic pressures. Previously, Legit.ng reported on another UI graduate who cried over her CGPA after dreaming of a first class. Janet’s experience highlights the importance of personal growth alongside academic achievement.
