According to North-Western Province commanding officer Brighton Siwale, the duo was searching for mobile internet connectivity to submit their mandatory monthly reports. Preliminary investigations reveal that they were crossing the river to access a better network signal from the opposite bank. The Lutembwe River, located approximately 196 kilometers from Zambezi town, proved treacherous as strong water currents caused their canoe to capsize around 12:00 hours in the Nyachikayi area, on the west bank.
Mr. Siwale stated, "Unfortunately, while in the middle of the river, the canoe capsized due to strong water current. Both occupants failed to swim and subsequently drowned." The bodies have been retrieved and are awaiting transportation to the Zambezi District Hospital mortuary for further procedures.
