Nursing Student Faces Indefinite Suspension After Exposing Hospital Conditions in Viral Video

A nursing student in Enugu State has been handed an indefinite suspension after posting a video that went viral, exposing dire conditions at Uwani General Hospital. The state government has since moved to address the issues highlighted in the footage, but the student now faces disciplinary action from her educational institution.

Viral Video Reveals Critical Shortages During Night Shift

Joy Ezeugwu, a student at Ezzy College of Nursing in Enugu, posted the video on March 28, documenting the state of the public health facility during a night shift. The footage showed the absence of electricity, running water, cleaning staff, fumigation services, and oxygen supply. At the time, a woman was actively in labor on the ward, raising serious concerns about patient safety.

"There's a woman currently in labor, and there's no light," Ezeugwu said in the video. "What if there's a complication? No oxygen, no light to give birth to a child." She further explained, "This is Uwani General Hospital in Enugu. There is no light here to attend to patients, and we are the nurses on night duty, even water we don't have."

Government Response and Subsequent Suspension

The video spread widely online, drawing significant public attention to the hospital's conditions. This prompted the Enugu State Government to contact the facility directly. According to subsequent reports, the hospital restored electricity and addressed several of the issues raised within days of the video going viral.

However, by April 2, just five days after the original post, Ezeugwu had been suspended indefinitely from her clinical duties by her school. In a follow-up video, she addressed Nigerians directly, appearing visibly distressed. "I was the girl that posted about the hospital," she said. "Sadly, I was given an indefinite suspension and now removed from my clinical duties. Did I do anything wrong?"

Ezeugwu continued, "I never posted that video to bring the government down or to paint them bad. I only did that to bring it to their attention, which, luckily, they attended to and restored light to the hospital. I am so broken. I didn't know my goodness would be punishing me so badly."

Institutional Actions and Ongoing Uncertainty

The suspension was issued by Ezzy College of Nursing, where Ezeugwu is enrolled. It followed a query issued by the Enugu State Government to hospital management over the video's contents. Ironically, this query ultimately prompted the fixes that Ezeugwu had been advocating for through her video.

As of the time of reporting, Ezeugwu and her colleague have been instructed not to resume clinical duties, with no timeline given for when the suspension may be reviewed. The hospital and the college have not made public statements addressing the suspensions, leaving the students' academic and professional futures uncertain.

This case highlights the complex dynamics between whistleblowing, institutional accountability, and professional consequences in Nigeria's healthcare and educational systems. While the video succeeded in drawing attention to critical infrastructure issues, it has resulted in severe repercussions for the student who brought them to light.
