Student Overcomes Multiple University Rejections to Gain UNIMAID Admission with 324 UTME Score
A determined student, Udoh Godwin Solomon, has achieved his dream of studying medicine after facing several admission denials from prominent Nigerian universities. He recently celebrated his acceptance into the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) for a six-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, using his Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) score of 324 as a key factor in his success.
Years of Persistence Lead to Breakthrough
Godwin's journey to admission was marked by perseverance and resilience. He disclosed on Facebook that he had been actively seeking university placement for years, repeatedly taking the UTME to improve his chances. In 2021, with a UTME score of 182, he applied to study medicine at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) but was rejected. The following year, he targeted Lagos State University (LASU) with a score of 254, yet again faced denial.
Undeterred, in 2023, he attempted to gain entry into Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) through the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) pathway. However, he did not achieve the required points for direct entry into the OAU MBBS programme. In 2024, his application to the University of Ibadan (UI) with a UTME score of 260 also ended in rejection.
Final Success at UNIMAID
The turning point came in 2025 when Godwin, with an improved UTME score of 324, applied to UNIMAID and was admitted into the College of Medical Sciences. He shared a screenshot of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) notification confirming his admission, expressing joy and gratitude on social media. In his post, he remarked, "Congratulations to me on my matriculation. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my academic journey. I pray for wisdom, strength, and success as I pursue my dreams."
Godwin emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating, "Delay is never a denial. Several years of waiting has become a reality, and I pray May God grant me the strength to overcome every challenge until I reach the finish line." He also offered encouragement to other students, urging them not to give up and to believe in their potential for greatness.
Social Media Reactions and Broader Context
His inspiring story garnered positive reactions on Facebook, with users congratulating him and wishing him success in his medical studies. Comments included messages like "Congratulations, Doc. From Matriculation to Convocation with success" and "May God preserve you dear, and crown your efforts with good grades."
This case highlights the competitive nature of medical admissions in Nigeria and the challenges many students face in securing spots at top universities. It also underscores the value of persistence, as Godwin's determination ultimately led to his acceptance at UNIMAID, where he now embarks on his academic pursuit in medicine and surgery.
