University of Ibadan Offers Medicine Admission to Boy with Outstanding WAEC, JAMB Score 359
UI Offers Medicine Admission to Boy with Outstanding WAEC, JAMB 359

The University of Ibadan (UI) has granted admission to a young male student to study Medicine and Surgery, following his exceptional performance in both the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The announcement was made via a LinkedIn post by educator Michael Omisore, who identified the student as one of his former pupils under the SSCE Project initiative.

Teacher Celebrates Former Students' Matriculation at UI

In his post, Omisore explained that he visited the University of Ibadan to mark the matriculation of several former students who had successfully gained admission to the institution—a tradition he observes annually for those entering UI, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). He wrote: 'Last week I was at the University of Ibadan to celebrate past students of the SSCE Project that just gained admission to the university on their matriculation day. I try to do this every year for students that gain admission to UNILAG, LASU, OAU and UI. The others (that gain admission to other higher institutions) I ask them to send me their matric pictures.'

Outstanding UTME and SSCE Results Secured Admission

Omisore highlighted that the student's admission was secured solely on the merit of his stellar examination results. The young scholar scored 359 in the 2025 UTME—a performance well above the competitive threshold for Medicine and Surgery at UI. Additionally, his WASSCE results were described as 'great,' meeting the university's stringent entry requirements. Omisore stated: 'In UI this year, we have students admitted into Medicine, Law, Philosophy and German departments (those that I know). One of them, who gained admission into Medicine & Surgery, scored 359 in UTME last year. His SSCE result was also great.'

Other Former Students Excel at LASU

Beyond the UI admission, Omisore also shared the academic progress of another former student currently at Lagos State University. This student, now in Part 2 of Banking and Finance, achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.59 in his first semester of Part 2, demonstrating continued excellence. Omisore noted: 'One of the past students, who is now a Part 2 student of Banking and Finance in LASU, sent me his first semester Part 2 result, and he is standing with a CGPA of 4.59.'

Inspiring Stories of Persistence at UI

This admission adds to a series of inspiring narratives from the University of Ibadan. In a related story, a young man who wrote JAMB multiple times eventually gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery at UI after initially failing the school's post-UTME. He shared his first JAMB score and celebrated his eventual success. Another account featured a young lady who, after being denied admission due to a poor post-UTME performance, rewrote JAMB, returned to UI, and finally secured her place. Additionally, a former filling station attendant who scored 330 in UTME and 79 in UI's post-UTME earned admission to Medicine without attending any tutorial centre.

Significance of Merit-Based Admission

The case underscores the University of Ibadan's commitment to merit-based admissions, particularly for highly competitive courses like Medicine and Surgery. With a UTME score of 359 and an outstanding WASSCE result, the student exemplifies the academic rigor required for such programs. Omisore's annual tradition of celebrating former students also highlights the role of mentorship and support systems in guiding students toward tertiary education success.
