UNIMED Implements Palliative Measures for Staff Following Fuel Price Surge
The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), located in Ondo town, Ondo State, has officially launched a comprehensive palliative initiative designed to alleviate the financial burden on its employees in response to the recent fuel price increase. This strategic move comes as the institution acknowledges the severe economic strain triggered by the hike, which has adversely affected the daily living conditions and overall welfare of its workforce across the country.
Management's Proactive Response to Economic Challenges
According to Isaac Oluyi, the public relations officer of UNIMED, the management approved the disbursement of palliative support as a direct response to the escalating fuel costs. This decision aligns with the vice-chancellor's steadfast commitment to prioritizing staff welfare, ensuring that employees receive necessary relief during these challenging times. Oluyi further highlighted that the university had already demonstrated its dedication to staff well-being by commencing the payment of the new minimum wage to its workforce in October 2025, reinforcing its ongoing efforts to support employees.
Vice-Chancellor's Assurance and Vision for Staff Support
Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, addressed a cross-section of staff members, describing the palliative intervention as both timely and essential. She emphasized that the administration is fully aware of the economic difficulties faced by staff and understands the associated challenges. Adejuyigbe reiterated that worker welfare remains a top priority, with her administration committed to fostering a supportive work environment that enables staff to thrive and excel in their roles.
Key Statements from the Vice-Chancellor:- "This palliative is a clear testament to my unwavering commitment to the welfare of our staff. You are the golden geese that lay the eggs, and it is only right that we take good care of you so you can continue to give your best."
- "By introducing this intervention, we aimed to provide some relief and support to staff during this tough time. If the staff were happy and motivated, they would do a better job, which would help the university succeed in both its academic and administrative goals."
- "This benefit shows how much I care about our staff’s well-being. You’re the ones who make our organisation successful, and it’s only fair that we look after you so you can keep doing your best."
- "We will do everything we can to make our university the top choice for medical science education and a place where all employees can be proud to work."
The palliative package is expected to provide significant relief to UNIMED staff, helping them navigate the current economic pressures while maintaining productivity and morale. This initiative underscores the university's proactive approach to addressing national economic issues at the institutional level, setting a precedent for other educational bodies in Nigeria.
