FRSC and Beer Sectoral Group Renew Pact to Combat Drink-Driving in Nigeria
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially renewed a strategic partnership with major brewing companies in Nigeria, represented by the Beer Sectoral Group (BSG), to intensify efforts against drink-driving and improve road safety across the nation. This renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) extends the collaboration for an additional five years, with both parties committing to deepen public awareness campaigns, enhance enforcement measures, and strengthen community engagement initiatives.
Emphasis on Synergy and Collaboration
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted the critical importance of synergy between government agencies and the private sector in addressing road crashes, particularly those linked to alcohol consumption. He emphasized that saving lives on Nigerian roads requires sustained and collaborative efforts, noting that the corps will continue to work closely with industry players to promote responsible behavior among motorists and reduce incidents of drunk-driving.
Industry Commitment to Road Safety
Speaking on behalf of the BSG, Thibaut Boidin, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc and Chairman of the BSG, stated that the renewal reflects the brewing industry's unwavering commitment to sustained collaboration with regulators. He cited previous joint campaigns, such as the Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign, as impactful initiatives that have made a difference. Boidin added that the next phase of the partnership will focus on expanding the reach of these campaigns and strengthening their implementation to achieve greater outcomes.
Focus on Responsible Consumption
Girish Sharma, Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria, reiterated the industry's dedication to supporting initiatives that promote safer roads. He pointed out that while alcoholic beverages are often blamed for road crashes, the real issue lies in irresponsible consumption, particularly the act of drinking and driving. Sharma affirmed, "We are here to work with you and ensure that this programme grows bigger and delivers real impact. Saving lives is what matters most."
Support from Brewing Leaders
Nicholas Kade, Chief Executive Officer of International Breweries Plc, commended the FRSC for its dedication and described the corps' efforts as critical to making communities safer. He assured that the brewing industry will continue to support initiatives that promote responsible drinking and enhance road safety measures across Nigeria.
Milestone in Public-Private Collaboration
Abiola Laseinde, Executive Director of the Beer Sectoral Group, described the renewal as a significant milestone in public-private collaboration. She noted that the partnership has successfully driven nationwide campaigns against drink-driving, influenced public behavior, and reached millions of Nigerians with vital road safety messages. Laseinde added that both parties plan to scale up interventions over the next five years to further reduce road crashes and promote responsible alcohol consumption practices.
The FRSC and BSG's partnership has been central to national campaigns discouraging drunk-driving, with stakeholders expressing optimism that this renewed agreement will deliver stronger outcomes and contribute to a safer road environment for all Nigerians.
