AMVCA 2026: Bovi and Nomzamo Mbatha Named Hosts, Ending IK Osakioduwa's 11-Year Reign
In a significant shift for one of Africa's premier entertainment events, the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) has announced Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha as the co-hosts for its upcoming 12th edition. This decision brings to a close the remarkable 11-year run of IK Osakioduwa, who has served as the sole host since the awards' inception in 2013.
A New Era for the AMVCA Stage
The 12th AMVCA is scheduled to take place on May 9, 2026, at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria. This marks the first time in over a decade that the ceremony will feature a different hosting team, signaling a fresh direction for the annual celebration of African film and television excellence.
IK Osakioduwa has been a constant presence at the AMVCA, hosting every single edition since the awards launched. His departure represents the most substantial change to the ceremony's presentation format in its history. Organizers have described the new hosting duo as "a master of wit and narrative, and a global icon of screen and advocacy," promising an evening where "mastery meets African excellence."
Meet the New Hosts
Bovi Ugboma, one of Nigeria's most celebrated stand-up comedians, brings his sharp wit, engaging storytelling abilities, and commanding stage presence to the AMVCA platform. Known for his successful comedy specials and acting roles, Bovi expressed both excitement and reverence for his new role.
"The AMVCA stage is one of the biggest in Africa, and I don't take that lightly," Bovi stated. "I want to bring the energy, the laughs, and the magic that this night deserves. African storytelling is at an all-time high, and it's an honour to be the one holding the mic while we celebrate the best of it."
Nomzamo Mbatha joins as co-host, bringing international recognition and multifaceted talent to the proceedings. The South African actress, producer, and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador gained global attention through her role in Coming 2 America and currently stars as Queen Nandi in the acclaimed historical drama series Shaka iLembe, where she also serves as Executive Producer.
Nominations and Judging Panel
The 2026 edition features competitive nominations, with Gingerrr and The Herd leading the race with nine nominations each across various categories including acting, directing, and technical achievements. To Kill A Monkey follows closely with eight nominations, while My Father's Shadow, produced by the Davies brothers, has earned seven nominations.
In another notable appointment, veteran actress Joke Silva has been named head judge for the 12th AMVCA, bringing her extensive experience and respected perspective to the evaluation process.
Sponsorship and Support
The 2026 AMVCA continues to enjoy robust corporate support with sponsors including Guinness, MTN, Indomie, QuickTeller, Verve, Lush Hair, and several Diageo brands such as Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff Ice, Orijin, and Singleton. This diverse sponsorship portfolio underscores the event's significance within the African entertainment landscape.
As the AMVCA prepares for its 12th edition, the hosting change represents both an end to an era and the beginning of a new chapter for Africa's premier television and film awards ceremony. The combination of Bovi's comedic brilliance and Nomzamo Mbatha's international star power promises to deliver a memorable celebration of African creative achievement.
