The funeral rites of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo concluded recently, but several incidents during the three-day ceremonies have become major talking points online. Ekubo passed away after a prolonged battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer. His funeral included a Service of Songs in Lagos, a wake-keep in Arochukwu, and burial in his hometown. However, controversies ranging from a man touching the casket with a ring to phone thefts and questionable attire drew public attention.
Man Touching Casket With a Ring Sparks Suspicion
During the wake in Arochukwu, Abia State, a viral video showed a man in a black suit acting suspiciously near the white casket containing Ekubo's body. The man appeared to look around before touching the casket with a ring on his finger. He later examined the ring after the act. The footage sparked widespread speculation online, with many tagging Ekubo's friends and associates to identify the man and question his motives.
Yvonne Jegede’s Outfit Criticized at Service of Songs
Actress Yvonne Jegede attended the Service of Songs in Lagos wearing a knee-length white dress that was parted in the front. Social media users criticized her choice, calling it inappropriate for a funeral. Some suggested she should have worn a more conservative outfit like a boubou. Jegede was seen alongside other colleagues dressed in white, but her attire became a focal point of online commentary.
Phone Theft at Service of Songs
At the same Service of Songs, approximately nine phones were reported stolen. Among the victims was reality TV star and actress Bamike Olawunmi-Adenibuyan, known as Bambam, who was seen in a video handing her phone to a woman behind her. After publicly disclosing the theft, many urged her to question that woman. Actress Susan Peters also lost her iPhone 16 Pro Max and appealed to the thief, noting the device was locked and linked to her US number. Actor Stan Nze expressed disappointment, questioning how anyone could steal at a solemn event focused on morality.
Kcee’s Attire at the Funeral Draws Criticism
Businessman Emeka Okonkwo, known as E-Money, attended the burial wearing an elaborate white outfit with a long, floor-sweeping sash carried by two attendants. Social media users criticized his attire, asking whether he was at a funeral or a wedding. Many advised that people should dress appropriately for such occasions.
Ekubo's sister-in-law also spoke during the service of songs about his marriage to his wife, Awule, sharing how he sought her hand in marriage from her family.
