In a significant development, Pastor Chris Okafor, the founder of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, has finally presented himself for questioning at the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti. This appearance comes after the clergyman initially refused to honour a police invitation, sparking widespread public debate.
From Refusal to Compliance: The Police Summons
Pastor Okafor was invited by the police through a letter dated January 4, 2026, directing him to appear on January 5. He failed to comply with this first invitation, a move that drew heavy criticism from online observers who argued that no individual should be considered above the law. According to reports, Okafor initially resisted because he believed a related case involving actress Doris Ogala was already being handled at the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan. However, mounting pressure from influential figures reportedly convinced him to change his stance and appear at the SCID on January 7.
At the SCID, his statement was officially taken. Notably, he was not detained following the questioning. Police officials clarified that this was because no formal complainant has yet come forward to lodge a criminal complaint against the pastor, despite the barrage of public allegations circulating online and in the media.
A Web of Allegations and a Public Apology
The pastor's legal troubles stem from a cascade of serious allegations from various quarters, including former partners, church members, and even his daughter. The accusations range from abuse of authority and sexual misconduct to fraud. The controversy ignited weeks ago when Nollywood actress Doris Ogala publicly accused Okafor of reneging on a marriage promise.
Ogala escalated her claims, alleging that the pastor possesses compromising material against her and shared her private images without consent. She also revealed that Okafor had offered her $10,000 to make false statements blaming other pastors, an offer she says she accepted but refused to act upon.
Faced with the growing scandal, Pastor Chris Okafor, who recently married Pearl on December 16, 2025, eventually addressed his congregation. He admitted to some wrongdoing, offered a public apology, and stepped aside from his role as senior pastor. However, this apology did little to satisfy critics demanding tangible legal accountability beyond words.
Police Stance and Ongoing Investigations
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had earlier ordered a probe into the allegations to restore public confidence in the police force. Following Okafor's questioning at SCID, police officials stated that while the Lagos Command would allow the ongoing investigation at Zone 2 to proceed, they remain committed to pursuing justice.
They encouraged any victims with evidence to step forward, with assurances of protection and support. The police emphasized that the door remains open for testimonies and evidence to be presented, highlighting that their investigation is contingent on victims' cooperation.
The case continues to highlight the complex intersection of celebrity, religion, and the law in Nigeria, with the public keenly watching for further developments and whether formal charges will eventually be brought forward.
