Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has credited his father's monumental success to the privileges of being born into the renowned Ransome-Kuti family. In a candid interview on Ada's Room, the Grammy-nominated musician argued that without his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela's global fame would never have materialized.
“In life, nothing comes from nothing. Even my father; Fela cannot be as great as he is if he wasn’t Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s son. If Fela was not born by Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, there would be no Fela. You would never have heard about him,” Seun stated.
He emphasized that while the family name opens doors, it also imposes immense pressure to uphold a legacy of excellence. “The fact that you are from a great family, people expect you to have that greatness. Nobody in the professional world wants to be patient with you and watch you grow or invest in you as an artiste. They just assume you have greatness in you and that puts you under a lot of pressure,” he explained.
Seun Kuti Embraces 'Nepo Baby' Label
Seun acknowledged that he benefits from nepotism, but insisted that talent and hard work are non-negotiable. “I can be a Nepo baby, but my father is not on stage playing my sax or writing my songs or touring with me. My father’s name would definitely open doors for me, but as soon as you slide in, there is pressure on you to meet the standard he set,” he said.
He added that in the Ransome-Kuti family, children are raised to earn their achievements. “So, nothing comes from nothing. But the good thing about my family is that you have to work. There is no shortcuts to it.”
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
Fans on social media responded with varied opinions. User @Dorren06 agreed, writing: “Seun Kuti has a point tho. So I do agree with him.” @BigNonny0 drew a parallel to Davido: “That's how davido father opened door for davido but he kept the standard and see where he is and I will do as well nothing comes from nothing.”
However, @OlaOladele7 countered: “but you are still a nepo baby you are just making us realize your daddy eas a Nepo too.” @ProsperUfo7253 noted: “Nepo baby or not, talent still has to do the talking.”
Seun Kuti Also Speaks on Nigeria's Security Crisis
In a separate incident, Seun Kuti criticized the persistent kidnapping of schoolchildren in Nigeria. Following a recent abduction in Oyo State, he released a video recalling similar incidents under former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari. He argued that online outcry alone cannot solve the country's security challenges, as the government often ignores social media protests.
Seun Kuti's reflections on family privilege and societal expectations continue to spark debate about the role of background versus individual effort in achieving greatness.
