A Nigerian lady residing in China has sparked online reactions after sharing a video that demonstrates the purchasing power of N4,000 (approximately 20 Chinese Yuan) in a Chinese supermarket. The video, posted on TikTok by user @thatgurl_cadee, quickly went viral as viewers compared the cost of living between China and Nigeria.
Lady's Grocery Challenge in Changzhou
In the trending clip, the lady, who lives in the city of Changzhou, set out to see if she could buy ingredients for a full meal of Couscous and Pepper Chicken using only N4,000. She acknowledged that prices vary across Chinese cities, so she specified her location. With her strict budget, she managed to purchase a surprising variety of items, including chicken breast, multiple chicken legs, fresh ginger, garlic, a large quantity of chili peppers, green beans, and a pack of eggs.
Initially, her total came to just 13.17 RMB (about N2,600). Determined to use the full N4,000, she returned to the meat section to add more chicken. She explained: "I went back for more chicken because I'm making pepper chicken, so let the chicken be much. I added two more chicken legs. I went to weigh it and then... it is now above my budget with just 1 Yuan. But I was like no, don't worry, I know what to do. I can fix this. I went back and I kept one chicken—the one that is big—and replaced it with a smaller size because what? I am smart." After swapping the larger chicken for a smaller one, the total came to 20.69 RMB (roughly N4,100), just within her budget.
Reactions from Nigerians
The video drew numerous comments from TikTok users who expressed amazement at the low cost. One user, soomaiya.gana, asked: "All this for four thousand naira ???" Another, Honest Autos, said: "E kon be like 80s in Nigeria." Tolu commented: "Food is the cheapest thing in China." Ybbeautylounge noted: "That chicken breast alone costs about 8,000 in Nigeria." The comparison highlighted the stark difference in food prices between the two countries.
This is not the first time a Nigerian abroad has shared cost-of-living insights. Previously, a Nigerian lady in the United Kingdom broke down the expenses she incurred while relocating for nursing studies, including pre-application fees and visa costs.
