This historic moment underscores the growing global recognition of Nigerian and African musical contributions, as the institution continues to broaden its scope to reflect a more diverse and international soundscape.
Sade Adu Inducted as a Performer
Sade Adu, renowned for her smooth, velvety vocals and timeless hits from the 1980s and 1990s, will be inducted into the Performer category. Her distinctive sound and understated style have profoundly influenced generations of artists, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. Music analysts note that her legacy is evident in the work of contemporary superstars like Adele and Drake, who draw inspiration from her soulful delivery and sophisticated musical identity.
She joins a prestigious class of seven other performers for 2026, including British rock mainstays Oasis and Iron Maiden, the post-punk and electronic pioneers Joy Division/New Order, chart-topping drummer-turned-frontman Phil Collins, solo powerhouse Billy Idol, R&B titan Luther Vandross, and the influential hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan.
Fela Kuti Honored with Early Influence Award
In a major recognition of African music heritage, Fela Kuti has been honored with the Early Influence Award, acknowledging his groundbreaking role in shaping modern music. Widely regarded as the father of Afrobeat, Fela fused highlife, jazz, and funk into a revolutionary sound that not only challenged political authority but also transformed the global rhythm landscape.
Fela is recognized alongside other trailblazing figures in the Early Influence category, such as the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, hip-hop pioneers Queen Latifah and MC Lyte, and country-rock innovator Gram Parsons.
Ceremony Details and Additional Honorees
The 2026 induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. This event also celebrates the architects behind the scenes through the Musical Excellence Award, with this year's recipients including prolific songwriter Linda Creed, legendary producers Arif Mardin and Jimmy Miller, and the genre-defining co-founder of Def Jam, Rick Rubin.
To be eligible for induction, an artist must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago, a criterion that both Fela Kuti and Sade Adu have long surpassed, cementing their enduring impact on the music world.
