Ogun Relocates Students Over Methane Gas Pollution, Governor Assures Safety
Ogun Relocates Students Over Methane Gas Pollution

Governor Dapo Abiodun has temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, following a chemical inhalation incident linked to methane gas pollution. The governor announced the move during an on-the-spot assessment of the school, emphasizing that the relocation is a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers, and staff while experts investigate the source of the contamination.

Preliminary Findings Confirm Methane Gas

Governor Abiodun stated that preliminary investigations have confirmed the presence of methane gas in the affected area. The state government, through the Ministries of Environment and Health, is collaborating with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) to determine the root cause. “Twice now, we have recorded cases of pollution in this school and some neighbouring schools,” the governor noted. “What is interesting is that the gas pollution occurred at about the same time in the affected schools—about three schools altogether—and this has happened on two separate occasions.”

Geological Factors Under Investigation

The governor explained that after the first occurrence, gas analysers were installed across the schools, confirming methane. “Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions,” he said. The government is awaiting the final report from professionals handling the investigation.

Commitment to Safety and Public Health

Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives, stressing that every necessary measure would be taken to identify the pollution source and prevent recurrence. He assured residents that the government remains focused on safeguarding public health and environmental safety. “In the meantime, we have evacuated the students from the school. The rumour that these incidents are being deliberately targeted at schools is unfounded and should be disregarded. This appears to be a natural occurrence, and we are determined to get to the bottom of it,” he added.

Students to Return Only When Safe

The governor stated that students have been moved out temporarily and will not return until the environment is completely safe and conducive for learning. “We will continue to investigate the cause of this situation and take all necessary steps to address it,” he said. Updates will be provided as investigations progress.
