After Adam fell and handed over the planet earth to the devil, the devil became the god of this world. He established his systems on earth and enthroned his own people in all spheres—politics, business, family, religion, media, education, and entertainment. Parents bear enormous responsibilities toward their children, both material and immaterial. Material responsibilities include providing food, clothing, and shelter, while immaterial ones involve godly advice, counseling, and intercessory prayer.
The Challenges Children Face
When children go to school or other places, they encounter people with diverse views, philosophies, behaviors, and mindsets. They see things not present at home and hear things unfamiliar to them. Friends may pressure them to smoke, go to clubs, drink alcohol, or have boyfriends or girlfriends. Some face pressure to join secret cults in higher institutions. Because they are still young at heart, they might succumb to these pressures.
The Role of Prayer
Among the immaterial responsibilities, prayer is paramount. When children are away, parents must pray for them ceaselessly. Many parents claim, "My son cannot do this," or "My daughter cannot do that," believing they know their child well. However, Bishop Ighele asserts that parents do not truly know their children. A child who was introverted before school may change due to peer pressure. The Bible instructs us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This continuous prayer should cover both well-behaved and misbehaving children.
Keep interceding for your children at all times. It is part of your parental responsibilities. Love you!
Bishop Charles Ighele is the General Superintendent of Holy Spirit Mission, Lagos.
