In a significant move ahead of the 2027 general elections, a key ally has launched a vigorous campaign to secure a third term for Elder Leke Joseph Abejide, the lawmaker representing Yagba East/West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency.
Media Aide Appeals for Continuity, Cites Legislative Gains
Bashiru Abdul Mohammed (BAM), the Special Adviser on Public Communications to Abejide, made a public appeal for the lawmaker's re-election during a media briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, January 11, 2026. Mohammed argued that re-electing Abejide is crucial to ensure continuity and consolidate the developmental and legislative gains already recorded for the constituency in the National Assembly.
He stated that his principal merits another term based on his quality representation, people-oriented interventions, and effective participation in national lawmaking and oversight functions.
A Track Record of National Impact and Recognition
Mohammed, who also chairs The Watch Newspaper & TV, spotlighted Abejide's contributions to national growth, particularly through his oversight role with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). This work, he noted, has earned the lawmaker national recognition.
He detailed key legislative achievements, including:
- The repeal of the old Customs Act and the enactment of the Nigerian Customs Service Act, 2023.
- The sponsorship of the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
- Championing reforms in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and the modernisation of customs processes, including the E-Customs project.
Mohammed also revealed that Abejide's efforts were recognised with the award of Most Outstanding Legislator from North Central Nigeria by the Movement Advocacy for Good Governance and Leadership Forum (MAGOLF).
Substantial Constituency Development and Empowerment
The media aide provided a comprehensive list of Abejide's interventions within Yagba Federal Constituency, emphasising his deep commitment to grassroots development. The highlighted projects include:
- Over ₦1 billion spent on widows’ support, feeding programmes, and empowerment initiatives.
- ₦710 million in development support disbursed to 71 communities.
- The inauguration of the Lion Squad security outfit to combat terrorism and insecurity, supported with donations of motorcycles, security vans, and other equipment.
- Provision of hundreds of millions of naira in non-interest loans to businesswomen through the Leke Abejide Foundation.
- Installation of solar streetlights, construction of asphalt roads, and free WAEC registration for students.
- Facilitation of federal employment opportunities for indigenes in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Bashiru Abdul Mohammed concluded by passionately appealing to the people of Yagba East/West/Mopamuro to consider this extensive track record and entrust Abejide with a third mandate for sustained development and effective representation.
