Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, has accused President Bola Tinubu of plotting to undermine Nigeria's democracy by seeking to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). In a statement released by his media office on Saturday, June 27, Atiku warned that such a move could pave the way for a one-party state as the country approaches its next general election.
Allegations of a Plot to Weaken Opposition
Atiku described the reported attempt to deregister the NDC through legal means as a clear indication of the administration's determination to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that any efforts to reduce political competition or limit citizens' choices at the ballot box would pose a major threat to national stability and political governance. The statement was also shared on social media by Paul Ibe, Atiku's media aide.
Warning of a One-Party State
The former vice president cautioned that deregistering the NDC could set a dangerous precedent, potentially leading to a one-party state. He emphasized the importance of a vibrant opposition in a democracy and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against any attempts to stifle political dissent.
Atiku's allegations come amid heightened political tensions as the 2027 elections draw closer. The NDC is one of several opposition parties in Nigeria, and its deregistration would significantly alter the political landscape. Atiku called on the public and international community to monitor the situation closely.
