2027 Election: Atiku's Son Joins APC, Renames Group for Tinubu
Atiku's Son Dumps PDP for APC, Backs Tinubu

In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Abba Atiku Abubakar, the son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The move, described by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin as "courageous and ideological," signals a major shift within Nigeria's political landscape and deals a blow to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A Defection Driven by Conviction

Barau Jibrin, who received Abba into the APC fold in Abuja on Thursday, January 15, 2026, stated that the decision was based on personal conviction. In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page on Friday, January 16, Jibrin emphasized that Abba joined the ruling party not because of his father's identity, but because he believes in President Bola Tinubu's ideology and programmes for Nigeria.

Jibrin revealed that Abba, who had been observing political developments from the United States, was impressed by the administration's reforms and outreach efforts. This admiration prompted his return to Nigeria and his subsequent decision to align with the APC.

Rebranding for 'Renewed Hope'

Demonstrating his full commitment, Abba Atiku Abubakar has taken the symbolic step of renaming his political support group. The Atiku Haske Organisation, originally established in 2022, has now been rebranded as the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation.

He has directed all coordinators and members of this structure to immediately join the APC and begin mobilising support for President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The reception ceremony in Abuja was also attended by Mustafa Salihu, the APC's National Vice-Chairman for the North-East.

Political Repercussions and Reactions

This defection occurs amidst ongoing leadership struggles within the PDP and represents another high-profile exit from the party. It follows the recent resignation of former senator and diplomat, Abdallah Wali, from the PDP.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has assured Abba of maximum support within the APC. The move is seen as strategically significant for the ruling party as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 presidential election, potentially drawing sympathy and followers from the opposition's stronghold.

The development adds a dramatic familial dimension to the longstanding political rivalry between Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, recalling similar historical instances where family members supported political opponents of their relatives.
