The Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has made a firm commitment to deliver transparent and credible general elections in 2027. He declared that extensive preparations are already in motion to fortify the nation's democratic framework.
New Year Message Focuses on Renewal and Preparation
In his New Year address to INEC staff across the country, Professor Amupitan framed the coming year as a pivotal season for renewal and institutional strengthening. He reflected on the commission's performance in 2025, specifically praising staff for the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election. This poll was held shortly after he assumed office on October 23, 2025.
According to the INEC boss, the Anambra exercise proved that with discipline, unity, and professionalism, the commission can safeguard the integrity of the ballot and enhance public trust in Nigeria's electoral system.
Roadmap to 2027: Key Elections Ahead
Looking forward, Professor Amupitan outlined an immediate and medium-term electoral calendar that requires rigorous preparation from the commission.
The upcoming FCT Area Council Elections in February 2026 are the first major test. This will be followed by the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
"Our preparations for the general elections are paramount," Amupitan stated, expressing confidence that collective efforts would guarantee seamless processes. He reiterated the commission's ultimate goal: "to deliver a free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive poll."
Staff Welfare and Institutional Integrity
Beyond electoral logistics, the INEC Chairman pledged to prioritize the welfare of the commission's personnel. He reaffirmed his inaugural promise to cultivate a workplace built on equity, discipline, and mutual respect.
He urged every staff member to remain unwavering in upholding the electoral system's integrity. Amupitan emphasized that the collective dedication of INEC personnel is essential to building a commission trusted by all Nigerians. This effort is crucial to ensuring every eligible voter is empowered and that every vote counts in the forthcoming elections.
