Iyabo Obasanjo Announces Ogun Governorship Ambition Under APC
Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a recent radio interview, she expressed strong confidence in her chances, marking her return to active politics after years in academia.
Return to Politics and Confidence in Victory
Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on Frontline, an interactive programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, the former lawmaker disclosed her decision to re-enter the political arena. She stated that she is certain of victory in the forthcoming governorship race, having recently joined the ruling APC after about 15 years away from politics.
Iyabo previously represented Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011 and served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health. After losing her re-election bid in 2011, she relocated to the United States to pursue an academic career, eventually rising to the rank of professor in epidemiology.
Motivations and Governance Goals
During the radio programme, Iyabo explained that her ambition is driven by a desire to close perceived governance gaps and positively impact the lives of Ogun residents. She emphasized that the office of governor aligns with her skills and experience, and she is committed to improving citizens' lives both directly and indirectly.
She described herself as someone who lives a life of giving more than she takes, which informs her decision to re-enter politics. Iyabo also addressed concerns about power rotation to Ogun West, acknowledging that the region has not produced a governor since the state's creation about 50 years ago.
Addressing Political Dynamics and Challenges
While expressing sensitivity to the concerns of Ogun West, Iyabo argued that power rotation is not constitutionally mandated and should not be blamed on any particular district. She maintained that electoral outcomes are influenced by broader political dynamics, and after her tenure, she would support the emergence of a governor from Ogun West.
On the issue of gender, Iyabo stated that she prefers not to frame her ambition around gender sentiment, noting the strong emotions surrounding regional representation. Regarding her chances of clinching the APC ticket amid competition from party heavyweights, she said the race is open to all aspirants and that no one has a guaranteed ticket.
Potential Disadvantages and Confidence Factors
The governorship hopeful identified late entry into the race and limited financial resources as potential disadvantages. However, she dismissed the notion that money alone determines electoral success in Nigeria, insisting that voters can recognise credible leadership.
Iyabo expressed determination to work hard to secure the party's nomination, with her confidence stemming from her past public service record and belief that people remember her contributions while in office.
Support from Traditional Ruler
Iyabo Obasanjo's ambition has drawn attention after a private visit to the palace of Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom. The monarch affirmed that her bid is a constitutional right and praised her professional and political pedigree.
He also urged greater inclusion of women in leadership, citing Ogun's history of producing accomplished female figures. This endorsement adds to the political momentum as Iyabo prepares for the upcoming electoral contest.
