PDP NEC Adopts 2027 Election Timetable, Declares End to Internal Crisis
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially adopted a comprehensive timetable for its activities leading up to the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for nationwide primaries and signaling a definitive end to the party's recent internal turmoil. The decision was made during the party's 108th meeting held on Monday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where leaders declared that the era of uncertainty is conclusively over.
Unified Front and Reconciliation Efforts
In a strong statement of unity, the PDP affirmed that it remains a robust, united, and formidable political entity, directly countering widespread speculations of internal disarray and fragmentation. The communiqué issued at the meeting's conclusion and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Haruna Mohammed Jungudo, expressed unwavering confidence in the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC), which is led by National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.
The committee stressed the critical importance of reconciliation among aggrieved members and stakeholders, insisting that any internal disagreements must be resolved through constructive dialogue and strict adherence to established party structures and democratic principles. This move is seen as a pivotal step toward healing divisions and fostering a cohesive environment ahead of the electoral contests.
Election Preparations and Compliance
As part of its meticulous preparations for the 2027 general elections, the NEC adopted a detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of party primaries. This includes specific timelines for the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms, ensuring a structured and transparent process. The committee directed all organs of the party to strictly comply with the approved schedule to guarantee a credible and fair nomination exercise.
The party also emphasized full compliance with guidelines and timelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly concerning the submission of membership registers, the conduct of primaries, and the resolution of any disputes that may arise. NEC further urged leaders and stakeholders at all levels to commence immediate preparations for state primaries, highlighting that adherence to statutory provisions and internal regulations will be essential for achieving an inclusive and hitch-free process.
Internal Reforms and Member Loyalty
On the front of internal reforms, the committee endorsed the ongoing electronic membership registration (e-registration) initiative, describing it as a strategic effort to modernize the party's database, enhance transparency, and boost grassroots participation. This digital transformation is expected to streamline operations and engage a broader base of supporters.
Calling for discipline and loyalty, the NEC charged all members to prioritize the collective interest of the party above personal ambitions, warning that unity and commitment are indispensable for repositioning the PDP as a viable alternative in the upcoming 2027 polls. The message underscored the need for a unified approach to reclaim political relevance and effectiveness.
Key Endorsements and Leadership Remarks
In his remarks, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reaffirmed his steadfast loyalty to the PDP, declaring that he has no intention of leaving the party after more than two decades of membership. He commended the NWC for successfully reclaiming the party's National Secretariat, viewing it as a demonstration of legitimacy and strong leadership.
Wike urged the leadership to intensify reconciliation efforts by actively reaching out to members who defected during the crisis, advising that transparency and openness in party affairs would encourage returning members and strengthen internal confidence. His endorsement is seen as a significant boost to party morale and stability.
Also speaking, National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed stated that the PDP has successfully navigated its leadership challenges and is now firmly focused on electoral preparation and strategic consolidation. He highlighted the party's renewed commitment to democratic processes and its readiness to contest the 2027 elections with vigor and unity.
While the party's spokesman, Haruna Mohammed Jungudo, indicated that specific details of the timetable would be made public by the NWC after final administrative processes, the overall message from the NEC meeting is clear: the PDP is moving forward with a renewed sense of purpose and cohesion, aiming to present a strong front in the next electoral cycle.
