In a significant political address, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on other Nigerian states to follow the example set by Rivers State in forging a broad, cross-party alliance to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bid for re-election in the 2027 general elections.
The "Rainbow Coalition" Model from Rivers
Speaking during a thank-you visit to the Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State on 5 January 2026, Wike lauded the political arrangement in his home state, which he termed a "Rainbow Coalition." He asserted that no other state currently matches Rivers' capacity to mobilize support for the President across traditional party lines.
"As it stands, Rivers is the only state where politics is no longer about parties but about the Renewed Hope family," Wike stated. "Other states should adopt this level of unity and inclusiveness to secure total victory for the President in 2027."
He explained that politics in Rivers State is now driven more by unity and a shared purpose rather than partisan affiliation. This strength, according to the former governor, is built on a long-standing tradition of cooperation and consensus-building, which has helped the state resist external pressures aimed at fracturing its political structure.
A Warning Against Complacency and Past Mistakes
Wike issued a stern warning against political complacency, emphasizing that popularity must never be taken for granted. He reflected on past political engagements, admitting that mistakes were made but valuable lessons were learned.
"We had agreements in the past, people emerged, and we all saw the challenges that followed. We will not repeat those mistakes," he declared. "Politics requires firmness, clarity and the courage not to go backwards."
The FCT Minister expressed optimism that as the 2027 elections approach, political stakeholders would harmonize their strengths on a single platform, further consolidating unity and strategic focus. He maintained that opposition forces have lost relevance and that no group has been marginalized in the current political process in Rivers.
Commendation for Rivers and a Call for Supportive Governance
Wike took the opportunity to commend the people of Rivers State for their early support of President Tinubu, even at a time when many Nigerians doubted his electoral prospects. He described this support as an act of good faith deserving of appreciation.
On his role as FCT Minister, Wike linked his appointment to the character and contribution of Rivers people to national development. He stated that the ongoing projects in Abuja reflect the diligence associated with the state.
He concluded with a broader call to Nigerians, urging support for governance that delivers tangible results. "This is the time for everyone to come together and do what is right. Where governance is working, it should be encouraged," Wike said. He described gratitude as an essential element of leadership and thanked his supporters for their loyalty.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Chita Eugene Epelle, praised Wike's visit as a moment of pride for the council. He highlighted the minister's leadership qualities and noted that his influence and achievements extend far beyond Rivers State.
