Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has issued a direct appeal to the influential traditional ruler of Okochiri Kingdom in Okrika, Rivers State, King Ateke Tom, to steer clear of political engagements as activities for the 2027 general elections begin to intensify.
A Clear Boundary Between Throne and Politics
During a visit to the monarch's palace on 3 January 2026, Wike explicitly asked the respected king to allow political actors to operate without interference from the traditional institution. He stressed that his appeal was for the monarch to refrain from involvement, not to invite it.
"Allow us to play our politics. Don't put your hand in it. We are not asking you to be involved; just allow us to play our game," the minister stated firmly. He highlighted that his visit was primarily a thank-you tour, marking the first time he was visiting a traditional ruler's palace for such a purpose, to express gratitude for Okrika's support.
Gratitude and a Stark Warning for 2027
Wike praised Ateke Tom's leadership for fostering sustained peace in Okrika Local Government Area, noting that crises had become rare under his watch. He described himself as an Ijaw man by affinity, citing his long-standing relationship with the people.
However, the tone shifted to caution when addressing the people at the Okrika council secretariat. The minister issued a stark warning about the upcoming 2027 political contests, declaring that any miscalculation would result in a "political burial." He insisted his camp was determined to avoid such a fatal error.
Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Wike thanked the community for standing with his political faction during the recent crisis and credited President Bola Tinubu for enabling local government elections and correcting past illegalities. "We took a risk in 2023 to support President Tinubu, and today we are benefiting from that decision," he said.
Setting the Stakes for the Next Election Cycle
Looking forward, Wike set new criteria for support, stating that his team would only back candidates with proven character to avoid repeating the mistakes of 2023. He made it clear that the popular slogan 'On your mandate, we stand' would not guarantee automatic tickets for anyone.
The visit also featured strong declarations of support for Wike from local leaders. Chairman of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress, George Sekibo, pledged the unwavering support of the Ijaw people. Okrika Local Government Chairman, Akuro Tobin, commended Wike's developmental strides, particularly the ongoing construction of the Eleme–Onne section of the East–West Road, which has boosted the local economy.
Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Linda Stewart, speaking for the women, expressed their solidarity with the minister and offered prayers for his political journey.
