A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Barrister Niyi Aborisade (BANA), has called for a renewed commitment to democratic ideals, insisting that democracy must translate into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians rather than serve the interests of a few political elites.
Call for People-Centered Democracy
Aborisade made the call in a statement to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a watershed in Nigeria’s political history and a symbol of the people’s determination to defend democratic governance. He said the annual observance provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, assess its progress, and recommit themselves to the pursuit of justice, accountability, and inclusive development.
According to him, the significance of June 12 lies not only in its historical importance but also in its enduring message that political power ultimately belongs to the people. “June 12 reminds us that democracy is not merely about elections or political office. It is about the welfare of the people, the protection of fundamental rights, and the creation of opportunities for every citizen to live a dignified life,” he said.
Challenges and the Way Forward
The legal practitioner noted that although Nigeria’s democratic experience has faced numerous challenges, democracy remains the most viable framework for guaranteeing peace, stability, and sustainable national development. He argued that democratic governance can only flourish where leaders are accountable, institutions are strong, and citizens actively participate in shaping public policies.
Aborisade stressed that the true measure of democracy should be reflected in the quality of education, access to healthcare, security of lives and property, economic opportunities, and social justice available to the people. While expressing concern over the economic hardships confronting many Nigerians, he maintained that the country’s challenges could be overcome through visionary leadership and people-centered governance.
Leadership and Accountability
The governorship hopeful urged political leaders at all levels to place national interest above personal ambition and focus on policies that promote human development and collective prosperity. Drawing inspiration from the progressive ideals of the late Obafemi Awolowo, Aborisade said government must remain committed to policies that uplift the masses through education, social investment, and purposeful leadership. According to him, leadership should not be judged by campaign promises but by measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
“The essence of democracy is to create opportunities for ordinary people to thrive and achieve their aspirations. Democracy must work for the masses and not for a privileged few,” he stated.
Engaging the Youth
He also urged young Nigerians to remain actively engaged in the democratic process and resist despair despite prevailing socio-economic challenges. “Our democracy may not be perfect, but it remains the platform through which citizens can demand accountability, influence governance, and shape a better future,” he said.
Aborisade called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peaceful coexistence, and collective responsibility, expressing confidence that both Oyo State and Nigeria possess the human and material resources required to attain greater development. “June 12 is a celebration of hope. It reminds us that the voice of the people matters, that freedom is worth defending, and that a brighter future is possible when citizens remain united in pursuit of the common good,” he added.
