The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as the first day of Muharram 1448AH. This marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year for Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
The announcement was made public through a statement issued in Sokoto by Professor Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, symbolizing a fresh spiritual start for the faithful.
Sokoto State Government Declares Public Holiday
Following the Sultan's declaration, the Sokoto State Government, under Governor Ahmed Aliyu, has declared Tuesday, June 16, a public holiday. This allows Muslim residents to observe and celebrate the Islamic New Year in a spirit of devotion and community.
The announcement was conveyed by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Governor. In his statement, Governor Aliyu encouraged residents to use the occasion for deep reflection and prayers for peace, particularly in light of ongoing security challenges affecting parts of the state and the nation.
Governor Aliyu Emphasizes Collective Responsibility
Governor Aliyu highlighted the efforts of both federal and state governments in supporting security agencies to combat banditry and other criminal activities. He stressed that national security is a collective duty requiring active participation from every patriotic citizen.
He urged Muslims to embrace repentance, self-assessment, and a renewed commitment to moral living as the new Islamic year begins. The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s support for religious activities and peace-building initiatives, extending warm wishes to Muslims across Nigeria for a peaceful and prosperous 1448AH.
