The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered a significant political setback in Jigawa State as former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Idris Garba Kareka, defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Kareka, who currently serves as the lawmaker representing the Jahun State Constituency, announced his resignation from the APC on Tuesday, June 2, during a well-attended political rally in his hometown of Jahun.
At the rally, Kareka formally joined the PDP and declared his intention to seek re-election as the lawmaker for the Jahun State Constituency in the Jigawa State House of Assembly. The two-term speaker and embattled lawmaker explained that his decision to leave the APC was driven by a desire to protect the interests of his constituents and promote the development of the Jahun Local Government Area.
According to reports from The Tribune, Kareka emphasized that his defection was not taken lightly but was necessary to ensure that the needs and aspirations of his people are adequately represented. He expressed confidence that the PDP provides a better platform to achieve these goals.
This development marks a major blow to the APC in Jigawa State, as Kareka is a prominent political figure with significant influence in the region. His departure is expected to impact the party's strength in the state assembly ahead of future elections.
Kareka's defection adds to the growing list of political realignments in the state, as parties gear up for the next electoral cycle. The PDP has welcomed Kareka, viewing his addition as a boost to its chances in the Jahun constituency and beyond.
