Ayere Kingdom's Asiwaju I Defects to APC in Kogi

In a significant development reshaping the political landscape of Kogi State, Prince Olatunji Olusoji, the revered Asiwaju I of Ayere Kingdom in Kogi West, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The prominent businessman and philanthropist was formally received into the party by Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, at a notable event on 24 December 2025.

A Strategic Defection and Warm Welcome

The ceremony, attended by top party leaders and government officials, marked Prince Olusoji's formal departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Governor Ododo hailed the defection as both timely and a major boost for the APC, reflecting growing confidence in the state's governance direction. He highlighted Olusoji's extensive philanthropic record, particularly his scholarships and financial aid for students in tertiary institutions across the state.

In his address, Prince Olusoji, who is the CEO of Grosvenor Group and founder of the Prince Olatunji Olusoji Foundation (PROOF), explained his move. He stated that his decision was driven by a belief in the positive impact of the APC at both federal and state levels. He emphasised that his lifelong commitment to community development, education, and empowerment aligns perfectly with the development agenda of Governor Ododo's administration.

Pledging the Okun Nation's Support

Addressing the governor directly, the traditional leader pledged the support of the Okun people for the administration. He expressed strong confidence in Governor Ododo's leadership and declared his readiness to mobilise substantial political and grassroots support for the APC throughout Kogi West.

"The Okun Nation believes in fairness, equity, and justice," Olusoji stated. "Our support for the APC is based on our expectations of inclusive governance and balanced development that reaches every part of Kogi State."

Philanthropy Meets Political Engagement

True to his reputation, the event also featured a major empowerment initiative. Prince Olusoji, who also serves as the Patron of the Kogi Market Men and Women Association, distributed vocational and business kits worth millions of naira to members of his constituency. Organisers stated the programme was designed to promote economic stability and self-reliance.

Party leaders at the gathering commended Olusoji for his consistent, non-partisan support for community development. They noted that his formal entry into the APC signals a new phase of political engagement in the region, one deeply focused on service, tangible development, and active grassroots participation. Governor Ododo also credited former Governor Yahaya Bello and other leaders for fostering the party unity that attracts influential figures like Prince Olusoji.
