Okabonye Chukwuani, a senatorial aspirant for Enugu East Senatorial District under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the party's leadership to ensure fairness, justice, and adherence to democratic principles as it reviews issues arising from its primary election process.
Chukwuani stated that the outcome of the review would be closely watched by party members, supporters, and the wider Nigerian public. He added that the party's handling of the matter would reflect its commitment to transparency, accountability, and internal democracy.
According to him, the credibility of the NDC would not be judged by the absence of disagreements but by its willingness to address difficult issues honestly and ensure that justice prevails, even when such decisions may be inconvenient.
He stressed that no individual should benefit from actions capable of undermining internal democracy, maintaining that aspirants who complied with the party's directives and guidelines should not be disadvantaged in the review process.
“The matter is bigger than any individual aspirant. It is about preserving the integrity of a movement that many Nigerians have come to believe in,” he said.
Chukwuani noted that many Nigerians had placed their hopes in the NDC as a platform capable of promoting a new political culture anchored on fairness, inclusiveness, and respect for due process.
He urged party leaders to rise above personal interests and take decisions that would strengthen public confidence in the party and its democratic credentials.
The senatorial hopeful also appealed to party members and supporters to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to the democratic process while the leadership concludes its review.
Expressing confidence in the party's leadership, Chukwuani said he believes the review process would ultimately be guided by truth, equity, and justice. He added that the outcome of the exercise would send a strong signal about the values the NDC seeks to uphold and whether its commitment to internal democracy extends beyond campaign promises to practical implementation.
