The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has made a fervent public appeal to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, urging him to remain loyal to the party and dismiss any speculation about joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This plea comes amid growing rumors of a potential political realignment in the state.
A Collective Plea From Party Faithfuls
Making the appeal on Monday, 29 December 2025, the Kano State NNPP Chairman, Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa, stated that the call represents the unified position of the party's leadership and its vast membership across the state. He appealed directly to the governor and any other members contemplating a switch.
“On behalf of all of us collectively, we once again appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to leave this party and not to defect to the party that we have opposed,” Dungurawa declared. He emphasized that the party remains steadfast to the ideals it campaigned on during the 2023 general elections.
Internal Reconciliation and Leadership Stance
Dungurawa revealed that the party hierarchy has ramped up efforts to mend internal fences and prevent a major split. He confirmed that the NNPP's national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside other critical stakeholders, is firmly against any move towards the APC.
“We did everything within our power to persuade them to be patient and not defect to the APC, because of our responsibility to them and our responsibility to the people of Kano,” he explained. The chairman also strongly denied allegations that some officials were working to create discord between the governor and Senator Kwankwaso, challenging anyone with evidence to present it.
Official Acknowledgement of Rift and Public Assurance
Reacting to the unfolding situation, the Director General of Media and Publicity to the governor, Sanusi Bature, acknowledged the existence of disagreements within the party's ranks. “Yes, there are issues within the party, and we are aware of the disagreements,” Bature stated when contacted. However, he refrained from commenting specifically on the defection rumors.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who secured his position on the NNPP ticket, currently holds the distinction of being the party's only serving governor in Nigeria. Despite persistent claims by opposition groups, his administration has not officially declared any intention to leave the NNPP.
The party has assured that it will continue dialogue with its leaders and supporters in Kano to preserve unity and ensure ongoing political stability in the state. Residents have been urged to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
